I believe that we are entering an unprecedented era on the web – an era in which we will have unprecedented opportunity to engineer our own information environments for professional and personal advantage. The resources on the web for doing this – data, APIs, application platforms, open source software and more – are becoming increasingly available, and at little or no cost to the individual user. I don’t believe that leveraging these resources will be restricted to technical experts or software engineers – it is something that eventually everyone will be able to do. But doing this will require developing new skills around understanding, programming and orchestrating data and functionality.
My objective for this blog is to cover this trend in a way that will be relevant for non-technical and semi-technical users. I hope to do this by sketching out ideas and thoughts, especially as they relate to new opportunities for creativity, exploration, knowledge management and critical thinking.
